It is now 70 years since GIs first landed on British soil to join their allies during WWII. Before the war, ordinary British people only knew Americans as the gangsters and heroes from the silver screen. They were in for a shock.

The first GIs landed on Britain's shores in 1942 and brought with them candy, Coca-Cola, cigarettes and nylon.

GIs were reportedly very generous. With average salaries more than five times that of a British soldier and no living expenses to worry about, there was plenty of time for parties.

GI veteran Lester Gaiter recalls: "We would crash their parties, drink their beer, flirt with their women".

And their generous nature made them alluring to women - around 70,000 British women became GI brides.

The words emblazoned in large print on top of the Pall Mall Gazette in the first week of July 1885 - NOTICE TO OUR READERS, followed by "A Frank Warning", set the tone for a week-long report titled The Maiden Tribute of Modern Babylon, exposing the lurid underworld of London's child prostitutes.

It was referred to as a "veritable slave trade".

    Silver Jubilee - Apr 25, 2012

As I watched the archive film of the events celebrating Queen Elizabeth II's Silver Jubilee, after 25 years on the throne, I felt as if I was entering another world. The BBC coverage showed street parties, wheelbarrow races, egg-and-spoon races, fancy dress parades, floats - it all seemed more like a hundred years ago than a mere twenty-five. There was an ingenuousness about the festivities, an uncritical affection for the Royal Family and a strength of community, all of which have dissipated over the last quarter of a century.

King Charles II 'wanted' poster fetches £33,000

Charles II proclamation Charles escaped to Boscobel in Shropshire in 1651

A rare "wanted" poster for Charles II has been sold for just over £33,000 at an auction in Shropshire.

The poster offers a reward of £1,000 for the capture of the king, who had escaped after the battle of Worcester in 1651.

Auctioneer Richard Westwood-Brookes said the sale price was "astonishing". It had a guide price of £700 to £1,000.

The poster was bought by someone from the Boscobel area of Shropshire, where Charles II had hidden in an oak tree.

Mr Westwood-Brookes said: "I'm pleased that the British public are interested in our heritage to this extent."

Issued by Oliver Cromwell's parliament, the poster calls for "the discovery and apprehending of Charles Stuart and other traitors, his adherents and abettors".

Following the execution of Charles I in 1649, his son raised an army to try to regain the throne.

After defeat by parliamentary forces at the Battle of Worcester, Charles II fled to Shropshire, where he hid in an oak tree.

The monarchy was eventually restored with Charles II in 1661.
